Once Upon A Place is a visual, storytelling design on the topic immigration. The visual alphabet was created by different materials - dirt and plants and I transform it to a series of graphic visual. Each graphic represents a word as a way to express my feeling to the immigration.

Visual alphabet

My inspiration comes from the growth cycle of plants, from seed to bloom and bear fruit and finally back to dust which is similar to human life cycle. I created this series of visual alphabet by comparing human migration behavior to the growth cycle of plants.

Visual Essay

I use the “alphabet” I created and then make a visual essay about my topic: immigration. Each graphic has its only story to tell the stage of immigration to show how immigrant’s feeling changed.

“Once Upon A Place”

Once upon a place, where the immigrants come from. Lots of them went thought the experience of crossing the border and then came to the new place. That experience was hard but the border, it’s your decision to treat it as a barrier or the bridge to the new land.

“Left Behind”

As we grow up, we all need to facing the problem of giving up of something. So when the immigrants decide to go to the new place, there are always something they need to give up and left behind.

“Chasing ”

Most of the immigrants emigrate because they want to live a better life. Maybe there are many of new opportunities in the new place. But hope them won’t be blinded by the overwhelming things and then lose themselves.

Translating the story

In the progress of translating, the new language is visual and can be accompanied by sound, gesture, tactile sense. Thus, I translated my visual essays into motion to make three story into one.
